Indies
East or West
The Indies historically refers to two distinct island regions.
The East Indies are the islands of Southeast Asia, including Indonesia and the Philippines.
The West Indies are the Caribbean islands, so named because Columbus believed he had reached Asia.
Both terms are now somewhat dated but persist in certain contexts: the Dutch East Indies, West Indies cricket team. (Lowercase indies means independent businesses or productions.)
