British colony
Crown's overseas possession
A British colony is a territory under the political control and sovereignty of the United Kingdom or its historical predecessors.
The term covers possessions from the height of the British Empire—when Britain controlled roughly a quarter of the world's land—through to remaining overseas territories today.
India was the jewel of British colonial possessions.
Hong Kong remained a British colony until 1997.
