S&P 500

Large-cap stock index

The S&P 500 is a stock market index tracking the performance of 500 large companies listed on American stock exchanges, widely considered the best single gauge of the U.S. stock market and economy.

Managed by Standard & Poor's, it is weighted by market capitalization, meaning larger companies have greater influence on the index's movement.

Investors use it as a benchmark for portfolio performance, and index funds that track it have become enormously popular.

My retirement account is mostly in an S&P 500 fund.
