Hobgoblin

A hobgoblin is a mischievous sprite or goblin from English folklore—not malevolent, but fond of pranks and causing minor household trouble.

The word extends to any source of fear or anxiety, especially one that's exaggerated or imaginary: Consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds.

A hobgoblin is slightly more domestic and less threatening than a goblin proper.
