Abyssinia

Old name, Ethiopia

Abyssinia is the former name for Ethiopia, the ancient nation in the Horn of Africa.

The term appears in historical texts and period literature: the Emperor of Abyssinia.

It survives mainly in nostalgic or ironic British slang—Abyssinia! as a pun on "I'll be seeing you," a jocular farewell.
