Solomonic dynasty
Sheba's lineage claim
The Solomonic dynasty was the ruling house of Ethiopia from the thirteenth century until Emperor Haile Selassie's overthrow in 1974.
The dynasty claimed descent from King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba through their son Menelik I—a lineage that gave Ethiopian emperors religious legitimacy and the title "Lion of Judah." This claimed biblical ancestry shaped Ethiopian identity and its unique form of Christianity.
