Pandemic immune virus
HIV-1 is the predominant strain of human immunodeficiency virus, responsible for the vast majority of HIV infections worldwide.
It is more virulent and transmissible than HIV-2, which is largely confined to West Africa.
When people speak of HIV without qualification, they almost always mean HIV-1.
