Ryan White

Hemophiliac advocacy symbol

Ryan White was an American teenager who became a national figure in AIDS awareness after contracting HIV from a blood transfusion for hemophilia in 1984.

His family's fight against discrimination when he was barred from school brought public attention to AIDS stigma.

He died in 1990 at age eighteen.

The Ryan White CARE Act, landmark federal HIV/AIDS funding legislation, bears his name.
