Generation

Labeled age group

Generation spans several related ideas about producing and grouping.

To generate is to bring something into existence—power, ideas, offspring—and a generation is what results.

A generation of people shares roughly the same birth years and formative experiences: the Greatest Generation, Generation X, my parents' generation.

The span is typically twenty to thirty years.

Generation also describes versions of technology or products: a new generation of smartphones, third-generation nuclear reactors.

In biology, it's one cycle of reproduction in a lineage.
