antecedents

What pronouns replace

Antecedents are the things that came before—predecessors, ancestors, or prior events that help explain what followed.

In grammar, an antecedent is the noun that a pronoun refers back to: in The dog wagged its tail, "dog" is the antecedent of "its." Someone's antecedents are their family background or personal history: The candidate's antecedents were thoroughly investigated.

The word emphasizes causal or logical connection between what precedes and what follows.
