dykes
Embankments holding water
Dykes is the plural of dyke, with all its meanings.
A dyke is an embankment built to hold back water: The dykes protecting the lowlands.
Dyke is also a spelling variant of dike for a geological formation—a sheet of igneous rock cutting through other strata.
Separately, dyke is slang for a lesbian, often derogatory when used by outsiders but reclaimed by some lesbians themselves: a dyke bar, dykes on bikes.
