glasnost

Kremlin's new candor

Glasnost is a Russian word meaning openness or transparency, famously associated with Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev's reforms in the 1980s that allowed greater freedom of speech and press in the USSR.

In English, it often appears in discussions of political reform or institutional transparency, sometimes used loosely to describe any policy shift toward openness after a period of secrecy.

The new CEO promised a glasnost approach to company communications.
