five-year plans

Half-decade blueprints

Five-year plans are comprehensive economic development strategies covering a five-year period.

The term most commonly refers to the centralized planning system pioneered by the Soviet Union under Stalin in 1928, which set production quotas and targets for industry and agriculture.

Other communist states adopted similar approaches.

More casually, a five-year plan is any medium-term personal or professional goal: What's your five-year plan after graduation? (Capitalized Five-Year Plans typically refers specifically to Soviet economic policy.)
