Chicanos

Mexican-American identity movement

Chicanos are Americans of Mexican descent, particularly those who embrace a politicized ethnic identity rooted in the civil rights movements of the 1960s and 70s.

The term carries connotations of cultural pride and activism: Chicano studies, Chicano art.

Some Mexican Americans prefer the term; others find it dated or politically charged.

The feminine form is Chicana.
