Chicana
Mexican-American woman
A Chicana is a woman of Mexican descent living in the United States, particularly one who embraces a political and cultural identity rooted in the Chicano movement of the 1960s and 70s.
The term carries connotations of pride, activism, and connection to indigenous Mexican heritage: As a Chicana artist, her work explores border identity.
Some use it broadly for any Mexican-American woman; others reserve it for those who claim it politically.
