Chechnya

Grozny's home territory

Chechnya is a republic in southern Russia, located in the North Caucasus mountains.

The region has been the site of two brutal wars between Chechen separatists and Russian forces in the 1990s and 2000s, leaving the capital Grozny devastated.

Under strongman Ramzan Kadyrov, Chechnya remains nominally part of Russia while operating with significant autonomy: Chechnya has been accused of severe human rights abuses.
