German reunification
East meets West
German reunification is the 1990 merger of East and West Germany into a single nation, ending the Cold War division that had split the country since 1949.
The event followed the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989: German reunification transformed the European political landscape.
The term typically refers specifically to this historical event rather than reunification in general.
