hatter
Maker of caps
A hatter is someone who makes or sells hats.
The word appears most often in the phrase mad as a hatter, describing erratic or eccentric behavior—a reference to mercury poisoning that afflicted hat makers who used the toxic metal in felt processing.
The Mad Hatter in Lewis Carroll's *Alice's Adventures in Wonderland* fixed the character type in popular imagination.
