The Troubles

Irish sectarian violence

The Troubles refers to the violent conflict in Northern Ireland from the late 1960s to 1998, involving armed campaigns, bombings, and civil unrest over whether the region should remain part of the United Kingdom or join the Republic of Ireland.

The conflict pitted unionists (predominantly Protestant) against nationalists (predominantly Catholic), with British forces caught between.

The 1998 Good Friday Agreement largely ended the violence.

Her family left Belfast during the Troubles.
