Babylonian Empire

Ancient Mesopotamian superpower

The Babylonian Empire was an ancient Mesopotamian civilization centered on the city of Babylon, in present-day Iraq.

It reached its height twice: under Hammurabi around 1750 BCE, known for his famous law code, and under Nebuchadnezzar II around 600 BCE, who built the legendary Hanging Gardens.

In modern usage, Babylonian suggests ancient opulence, decadence, or corruption: The party had a Babylonian excess to it.
