Tigris River
Baghdad's ancient artery
The Tigris is one of the two great rivers of Mesopotamia, flowing southeast from the mountains of eastern Turkey through Iraq to join the Euphrates near the Persian Gulf.
Along with the Euphrates, it defined the "land between the rivers" where early civilizations emerged.
The Tigris flooded unpredictably, unlike the gentler Nile.
