Al-Andalus

Islamic medieval Iberia

Al-Andalus is the Arabic name for the parts of the Iberian Peninsula under Muslim rule from 711 to 1492.

At its height, it encompassed most of modern Spain and Portugal.

The term evokes a period of cultural flourishing—Islamic architecture, philosophy, and coexistence among Muslims, Christians, and Jews.

The Alhambra remains a monument to Al-Andalus.
