Arabic numerals

Zero through nine

Arabic numerals are the ten digits 0 through 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9—the standard numerical symbols used throughout most of the world today.

The name reflects their transmission to Europe through Arabic-speaking scholars, though they originated in India.

They replaced Roman numerals for most purposes because they made arithmetic far easier.
