Boer
South African colonist
Boer refers to a South African of Dutch, German, or Huguenot descent, particularly the Afrikaans-speaking farmers who settled in the Cape Colony and later migrated inland during the 19th century.
The word comes from Dutch for "farmer." The Boers fought two wars against the British Empire for control of South African territories, known as the Boer Wars.
Today the term is largely historical, with Afrikaner being the more common designation for this ethnic group.
