Transvaal

Pretoria's historic region

Transvaal is a historical region in northeastern South Africa, named for its location across (trans) the Vaal River.

It existed as an independent Boer republic in the 19th century before becoming a British colony and later a South African province.

The name now applies informally to the area, though the province was divided in 1994: My grandfather grew up in the Transvaal.
