Formosa

Taiwan's old name

Formosa is the former Portuguese name for Taiwan, meaning "beautiful island." The name persists in some historical and formal contexts, particularly in older maps and documents.

Formosa also appears in place names elsewhere—Argentina has a Formosa province.

The adjective Formosan refers to Taiwan or its indigenous peoples: Formosan languages, the Formosan black bear.
