zoetropes
Spinning image drums
Zoetropes are cylindrical devices that create the illusion of motion.
Vertical slits line the drum's sides; a sequence of images lines the interior.
When spun, viewers peer through the slits to see the images appear to move—a horse galloping, a figure dancing.
The zoetrope was a 19th-century precursor to film animation.
