zeppelins

Cigar-shaped aircraft

Zeppelins are large rigid airships, named after German Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin, who pioneered their development in the early twentieth century.

Unlike blimps, zeppelins have an internal metal framework supporting the gas-filled envelope.

They were used for passenger travel and military bombing before the Hindenburg disaster of 1937 effectively ended their era: The zeppelin floated silently over the city.
