breeching

Rear harness strap

Breeching is a leather strap that passes behind a horse's hindquarters, attached to a harness or saddle to help the animal brake or back up, especially when going downhill: The breeching kept the cart from running up on the horse.

In naval history, breeching was the rope securing a cannon to a ship's side, absorbing recoil when fired.
