wood spirits

Haunting the trees

Wood spirits is methanol—a toxic alcohol originally produced by the destructive distillation of wood.

The term distinguishes it from grain alcohol (ethanol), which is safe to drink.

Wood spirits can cause blindness or death if consumed: Bootleggers sometimes cut liquor with wood spirits, poisoning their customers.

Also called wood alcohol.
