genius loci
Location's presiding atmosphere
Genius loci is the distinctive atmosphere or spirit of a place.
The Latin phrase literally means "spirit of the place," originally referring to a guardian deity in Roman religion.
Now it describes the unique character that makes a location feel the way it does—the quality that distinguishes a Parisian café from a Tokyo subway station, or gives an old house its particular mood.
Architects and urban planners invoke genius loci when designing spaces meant to honor rather than override their surroundings: The building respects the genius loci of the historic neighborhood.
