poltergeists

Noisy invisible pranksters

Poltergeists are ghosts or supernatural entities believed to cause physical disturbances—knocking sounds, objects moving or flying, furniture shaking.

The word comes from German for "noisy ghost." Unlike apparitions that merely appear, poltergeists make their presence known through chaos: The poltergeist hurled dishes across the kitchen.

Skeptics attribute poltergeist activity to fraud, natural causes, or psychological phenomena.
