wellheads

Where water emerges

Wellheads are the structures at the surface of a well—particularly oil or gas wells—where drilling equipment connects and production is controlled.

The wellhead houses valves, gauges, and fittings that regulate flow and pressure: Workers inspected the wellheads for leaks.

Figuratively, a wellhead can mean a source or origin: the wellhead of a river, the wellhead of inspiration.
