artesian

Naturally pressurized underground

Artesian describes water or wells where underground pressure causes water to rise naturally toward the surface without pumping.

An artesian well taps into a confined aquifer where water is trapped between impermeable rock layers, creating enough pressure that water flows upward on its own.

The farm relied on an artesian well that had been flowing for generations.

The term comes from Artois, a region in France where such wells were first drilled in Europe.
