water oak

Southeastern wetland hardwood

Water oak is a medium-sized oak tree native to the southeastern United States, typically found in lowlands and along streams.

Its leaves are variable in shape but often narrow and somewhat spatula-like, turning yellow or brown in fall.

The wood is weaker than most oaks, limiting its commercial use.

The water oaks shaded the whole backyard.
