vulcanise

Heat-treat raw rubber

Vulcanise is the British spelling of vulcanize—to treat rubber with heat and sulfur to make it harder, more elastic, and more durable.

The process, named after Vulcan, the Roman god of fire, transformed rubber from a curiosity into an industrial material: vulcanised tyres, vulcanised rubber soles.

Figuratively, to vulcanise something is to toughen or strengthen it.
