vulcanized

Sulfur-processed rubber

Vulcanized describes rubber that has been chemically treated with sulfur and heat to make it stronger, more elastic, and more resistant to temperature changes.

The process, called vulcanization, transforms soft, sticky raw rubber into the durable material used in tires, shoe soles, and industrial hoses.

The vulcanized rubber gasket held up well under pressure.

Before vulcanization was developed, rubber products would melt in summer heat and crack in winter cold.
