vitrify

Turn to glass

To vitrify is to convert into glass or a glassy substance, typically through heat.

The word applies both literally—The kiln vitrifies the clay glaze—and to processes that produce glass-like hardness or impermeability: vitrified tile, vitrified nuclear waste.

In cryonics, vitrification freezes tissue so rapidly that ice crystals can't form, preserving cellular structure.
