frit

Calcined silica mixture

Frit is a ceramic material made by fusing silica with fluxes and other ingredients, then cooling and grinding into powder.

It's an intermediate product in glassmaking and glazing—the fusion makes the materials easier to melt uniformly later: The potter mixed frit into her glaze recipe.

Also used as a verb: to frit is to make or convert into frit.
