uric acid

Purine breakdown product

Uric acid is a waste product formed when the body breaks down purines—compounds found in certain foods and in body tissues.

It normally dissolves in blood, passes through the kidneys, and leaves in urine.

When levels build up, uric acid can form crystals in joints, causing gout, or accumulate in the kidneys as stones.
