algae bloom
Lake's green takeover
An algae bloom is a rapid increase in the population of algae in a body of water, often turning the surface green, red, or brown.
Blooms occur when conditions favor explosive growth—warm temperatures, calm water, excess nutrients from fertilizer runoff.
Some blooms produce toxins harmful to fish, wildlife, and humans: The algae bloom closed the beach for swimming.
