up-down

Binary axis movement

Up-down describes alternating vertical movement or position—something that goes up, then down, or varies between higher and lower states.

It often modifies motion: an up-down bobbing of the head, the up-down rhythm of the piston.

In casual assessment, an up-down is a quick visual scan of someone from head to toe, often judgmental: She gave him the up-down and walked away.
