partial eclipse

Moon partly covered

A partial eclipse occurs when one celestial body only partly obscures another—the moon blocking a portion of the sun, or Earth's shadow covering part of the moon.

Unlike a total eclipse, some of the obscured body remains visible throughout: We watched the partial eclipse through special glasses.

The term extends to any incomplete blocking or overshadowing.
