Penumbras is the plural of penumbra, the partial shadow surrounding the complete shadow (umbra) cast by an object blocking light.
During an eclipse, the penumbra is the zone of partial obscuration.
Figuratively, a penumbra is a surrounding area of uncertainty or ambiguity: the penumbras of constitutional rights, operating in the penumbra between legal and illegal.
