tzar

Imperial Russian sovereign

Tzar is a variant spelling of czar, the title of Russian emperors before 1917.

Both spellings attempt to render the Russian word, which derives from Caesar.

The spelling czar is more common in American English, while tzar appears more often in British usage.

Like czar, it extends to officials with broad authority: drug tzar, energy tzar.
