two-by-four

Standard framing timber

A two-by-four is a standard piece of lumber nominally two inches thick and four inches wide, though actual dimensions are slightly smaller after milling.

It's the workhorse of construction framing—walls, floors, and roofs are built from them.

The term works as noun or adjective: a stack of two-by-fours, two-by-four studs.

Informally, a two-by-four can be any similar board used as a weapon or blunt instrument: He hit him with a two-by-four.
