truth-and-reconciliation
Post-conflict justice process
Truth-and-reconciliation describes a process or body designed to address historical injustices—typically state violence, human rights abuses, or systemic oppression—through official acknowledgment rather than criminal prosecution.
A truth-and-reconciliation commission gathers testimony from victims and perpetrators, creates a public record, and aims for societal healing: The truth-and-reconciliation process forced the nation to confront its past.
The model emerged prominently from post-apartheid South Africa and has since been applied to address wrongs against indigenous peoples, political prisoners, and other groups.
