historical revisionism
Rethinking the past
Historical revisionism is the reinterpretation of accepted historical narratives based on new evidence or perspectives.
In academic contexts, this is legitimate scholarly work: Revisionist historians challenged the traditional view of Reconstruction.
But the term often carries negative connotations, suggesting distortion of history for ideological purposes—particularly denying or minimizing atrocities: Holocaust revisionism.
The phrase can thus mean either healthy reexamination or dishonest manipulation, depending on context and speaker.
