land acknowledgment
Indigenous territory statement
A land acknowledgment is a statement recognizing the Indigenous peoples who originally inhabited the land where an event, institution, or building is located.
Common at the opening of ceremonies, academic events, and public gatherings: The conference began with a land acknowledgment honoring the Lenape people.
Critics view them as empty gestures unless paired with substantive action; supporters see them as a first step toward awareness of colonial history.
