troy weight

Gold and silver standard

Troy weight is a system of measurement used for precious metals and gemstones, where a troy pound contains twelve ounces rather than sixteen.

A troy ounce is heavier than a standard ounce, making it the unit quoted for gold and silver prices: Gold closed at $2,000 per troy ounce.

The system takes its name from Troyes, a French city that hosted medieval trade fairs.
